West Nile Virus

The occurrence of the West Nile Virus has been verified across the United States, including Johnson County, Indiana.  The West Nile Virus can cause encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain in humans and animals.  The virus, contracted in humans from the bite of an infected mosquito has been associated with an outbreak of the virus in our native bird population.  Birds likely to harbor the virus include crows, blue jays, and raptors.  The West Nile Virus was confirmed in the Johnson County bird population in both 2002 and 2003.
